Message from Daniel Pearl's parents

Send to friend September 04, 2009

Dear PEARL Reporters and Editors,

Each time we read your stories on the PEARL World Youth News website, we are reminded how extraordinary your work is. You are reporting what matters to young people, stories that are often missed by the mainstream media. You are sharing your articles with a worldwide audience – with truth, accuracy, objectivity and integrity – and keeping up with our son, Daniel Pearl’s golden standard of excellence in journalism.

You are showing us that young people care about what is happening around them, be it the environment, politics, culture or education.

By working in this online newsroom with your peers from more than 20 countries, you are making lifelong friends. You are also bringing us closer to your lives and to your communities – with facts, photos and videos that present an accurate and unbiased perspective of your world.

From your stories, we get a greater understanding and awareness of countries that we have not visited or read about in the news media. This holds true for every member of your audience who reads your stories on this website or in their school newspaper.

Our son Danny was passionate about telling the human side of the story, always searching for the truth by checking and double-checking his facts.  He did not sit at a desk to report his stories; he traveled the world, meeting people, making friends, sharing food, music and customs, so that his readers would get a first-hand, real glimpse of their lives and their thoughts.

We are proud that you are now young representatives of his values and his work. We can’t wait to see you in leadership roles in your careers, no matter where you will be physically based. PEARL stands for “Prepare and Educate Aspiring Reporters for Leadership” and we are very gratified that you are following in Danny’s footsteps and are able to benefit from this program that was initiated in 2004 by the Daniel Pearl Foundation in partnership with iEARN.

As a result of your involvement in PEARL, we are certain that you will always value quality information, be curious about and tolerant of diverse cultures and encourage a collaborative work ethic.

This makes us very hopeful about the future!

Please feel free to contact us at contact@danielpearl.org

With warmest wishes,
